Traditional Shaving Guide
Step 1. Preparation
Soak your shaving brush in warm water for 5 minutes to allow the hairs to absorb the water. While your brush is soaking, soften the beard by washing your face thoroughly in warm water or have a warm shower, cleansing your beard thoroughly. after soaking, gently shake the brush to remove any excess water.
Step 2. Lather Up
Apply a small amount of shaving cream to the tips of the brush or lather up by brushing vigorously over a good quality shaving soap. The cream or soap will help to keep the skin and beard warm and wet during the shaving process. Massage in a circular motion on your face to create a lather. Continue this process for 2-3 minutes until a cushion of lather has formed. Add a few extra drops of warm water to the brush to increase the lather if needed.
Step 3. The Shave
Firstly, make sure you use a unused or relatively new razor blade for the closest and least painful shave. Using slow short strokes, shave with the direction of your hair growth, rinsing the blade in warm water often. Always allow the razor to glide over the skin; do not apply much pressure. Below the jaw line shave with the growth of the beard. You can learn the direction of growth by exploring your beard with wet soapy fingers. At the collar line on the lower neck area the hair growth generally reverses direction so you may need to shave this area only upwards towards the chin.
When using a safety razor best results are achieved if you shave with the grain twice or once with the grain then once across the grain before shaving against the grain. This is known as a ‘three pass shave’.
Step 4. Rinse
Rinse the face with cool water to remove any excess cream or soap. Gently pat your face dry with a clean towel.
Step 5. Post-Shave Care
A great wet shave exfoliates, removes dead skin and cleanses the face. So now that your face is smooth and clean it’s time to look after your skin. Apply aftershave lotion or a moisturiser to condition and protect, we recommend avoiding alcohol based fragrances that will dry your skin rather than giving it the moisture it needs after shaving. If you need to apply cologne, apply it to the back of the neck or chest. Finally stand back and admire your work!
At this point we also recommend that you take a little time to care for your shaving brush and razor to keep them in tip top condition. Rinse your shaving brush and razor thoroughly in warm water after use. Carefully dry your razor and shake any excess water from your shaving brush then hang it to dry naturally.
