The Christmas adverts have started on TV. The smell of fireworks is in the air. The nights have grown long and cold. It can only mean one thing: it’s November. Or, as many of us have been calling it for the last couple of decades or so, Movember. Growing out of a movement in Adelaide in the late 90s where a group of men decided to grow a moustache for charity during November (or Movember as they called it), the Movember Foundation officially began in 2003. Since then, it has funded more than 1,320 men’s health projects around the world, raising an incredible 174 million dollars for good causes worldwide in the process.
The idea is simple. You grow a moustache to raise money for charity as a symbol of healthier men and a healthier world. It shows everyone you meet that men’s health matters, spreading the word and encouraging the conversations. Movember tackles a wide range of men’s health issues, including mental health, suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. And there are numerous ways you can get involved. It’s a superb cause and one we encourage all our customers to get involved in.
Of course, growing a moustache does involve not shaving one key part of your face. And there are plenty of options, too. You might go for the biker look with a huge horseshoe, or keep things sophisticated with a thin pencil moustache. You could go for the handlebar, the Fu Manchu, or even the walrus. They can all help to create a unique look for the month of Movember. But it does mean keeping the rest of your face free from hair to help your moustache stand out. And whoever said that having a moustache had to mean letting shaving standards slip? Here at Blades and Whiskers, we have everything you need to sculpt and style your ‘Mo’ during Movember (and beyond if you decide the look is really working for you).
It’s all in the razor
Double-edge razors, or DE razors as they are commonly known, were first introduced around the early 1900s. The innovation was to place a protective device between the blade’s edge and the skin. This safety element allowed people to achieve a really close, barber-style shave at home, reducing the level of skill required to feel clean and hair-free in front of your own bathroom mirror. The DE razor remains a popular alternative to electric and cartridge razors, thanks largely to the reduced cost and quality of the shaving experience. And we offer a healthy choice of DE razor brands and styles to choose from.
The Edwin Jagger range includes the 3ONE6 safety razor with both knurled and grooved handles and is constructed from 316 grade stainless steel which is resistant to corrosion and pitting. It’s a premium double-edge safety razor offering superior grip and enhanced accuracy. There are also plenty more excellent DE razors in the Edwin Jagger range, including the DE89, available in a range of colour choices.
The Merkur range of razors includes the Merkur 23C, Merkur 38C and Merkur 25C, all with the classic and elegant Merkur long-handled design. For those that prefer a shorter design, the iconic Merkur 34C is arguably one of the best safety razors on the market. Plus there is the Merkur 41C and 42C if you are after a safety razor with a retro look. All of these razors come with a shorter handle for a precise shave. The solid brass construction and high-quality chrome plating let you know you have something well-designed and made with care.
Choosing your blades
Of course, as well as a quality double-edged razor, you’ll need some equally exceptional blades to help sculpt your moustache and give you the perfect Movember mo. Here at Blades & Whiskers, we stock DE safety razor blades by some of the biggest names in the business, including Feather, Gillette, Astra and more. All the shaving blades are suitable for all our razors, so you can create the shaving combination that works for you. Some of our best sellers include the Feather Hi-Stainless DE blades and Merkur Super Platinum DE blades, but there are plenty more to choose from.
Creams, soaps and accessories
You’ll also need a high quality shaving cream or shaving soap to achieve that perfect shave and create your ideal moustache. And again, we’ve got you covered. Shaving creams are available in various sizes, with a big selection of scents and styles. Shaving creams can help your skin stay moist and prevent drying out, protect the skin from irritation and razor burn, and leave your face feeling fresh and hydrated after each shave. Creams and soaps are best applied using a shaving brush, and with our choice of badger and synthetic brushes, you can be sure of even application before your shave.
Of course, if you’re more of a shaving soap fan, you can check out our exceptional quality products for maximum protection and lubrication during shaving. Artisanal soaps are free from artificial fragrances or preservatives, and vegan options are available. We have everything you need to complete your pre- and post-shave routine, including balms, lotions and oils.
